Time is right to switch Manchester United's formation - Amorim states.

Man Utd skipper Bruno Fernandes was among multiple senior stars to miss the Boxing Day triumph against Newcastle.

Head coach Ruben Amorim argues that altering Manchester United's formation due to external scrutiny would have signaled "the finish" for him.

Initially against Newcastle, Amorim abandoned his usual back three setup with wide defenders and chose to use an standard back four with two central midfielders.

By his own admission this effectively functioned as a six-man defensive block in the final stages as his team clung on for a victory - securing just their second-ever shutout of the campaign.

While he once notably stated that not even the highest authority could pressure him to tweak his approach, Amorim maintains the capacity to utilize varied setups has consistently been part of his long-term vision.

Yet, he emphasizes he could only alter the tactics when his team were faring at an acceptable level - lest it would appear as if he was giving in to outside criticism.

"At the time I arrived here the previous campaign, I realized maybe I don't have the personnel to play well in a back three, but it was the commencement of a journey," he stated.

"The goal was to build an identity. Today is a different time. We don't have a lot of players, and we need adjust, so they see why we are making changes.

"It is not because of the demands of the media, or the supporters.

"When the press discuss changing the formation constantly, I cannot make a change because the players will understand I'm changing because of you and I feel that is a disaster for the coach.

"Once we are performing strongly in our system, that becomes the opportunity to change.

"We are going to grow into a stronger team because when all the players are available, we are not planning to use three defenders all the time."

Availability Issues Loom Large

Having just two wins in eight games prior to beating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is correct to state his team have been in good form.

He is, however, managing with a severely stretched roster, with multiple senior players already ruled out for the upcoming home game against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That number will grow if midfielder Mason Mount is unable to recover the injury that led to his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is one of those who will miss the Wolves clash, despite the fact he is reportedly pressing his boss to let him to make a comeback following his muscle problem.

"Bruno is already telling me he has to train," revealed Amorim. "But there is absolutely no possibility he is going to play against Wolves. Definitely not. You can write that."

Fernandes' Leadership Endures

However, the 31-year-old will almost certainly still be heavily involved, as while most injured players watch matches from the stands, Fernandes was spotted monitoring the warm-ups from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim is sure his leader to carry on providing input.

"The guy is a leader," he declared. "He cannot be the type of player that when he is absent, he's silent and offering advice. He's always communicating. That's why he's the skipper.

"There are flaws at times - the way he moves his arms - but he has a multitude of positive qualities. After he recovers, he goes to watch the rest of the squad training. There are a many things that go unnoticed.

"I'm not sure if he wants my position or not, but he's a leader. He is a true captain."

Recovery Timeline for Injured Personnel

While the exact timeline for Fernandes' return - and that of fellow unavailable stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains unclear, by the end of January, United will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from continental competition.
